Firefighter Ejected in Brightline Train Collision Witness Account

In a dramatic incident in Delray Beach, a collision between a Brightline train and a fire truck captured the attention of onlookers, leaving behind scenes of chaos and destruction.

According to eyewitness Christophe Lirola, who was observing from his balcony, the crash resulted in one firefighter being violently ejected from the truck. Lirola recounted, ‘One fireman flew out of the truck,’ vividly describing the horrifying sight of the fireman being thrown from the vehicle. In the aftermath, mangled steel and shattered glass marked the scene, a stark testimony to the severity of the crash.

Lirola, residing a block away on Third Avenue, hastily rushed to assist, capturing video footage on his cellphone. The footage depicted the grim reality—while one firefighter assisted his colleagues out of the wrecked fire truck, another lay motionless on the ground. Lirola noted that despite appearing almost immobile, the firefighter was conscious, with civilians providing aid until emergency services arrived.

Javier Columbie, another witness who was walking with his father nearby, described the fire truck as severely damaged, saying, ‘It was not even half of it, it was pretty damaged.’ The impact of the collision was such that three firefighters and twelve train passengers were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), alongside Brightline and Delray Beach Police, have launched an investigation into the incident to understand the causes of this tragic event.
