Kratos Secures $1.45 Billion U.S. Defense Contract for Hypersonic Testing

In a landmark move, Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has been awarded a $1.45 billion contract by the U.S. Department of Defense to enhance hypersonic testing capabilities.

This substantial investment is earmarked for the Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonic Test Bed (MACH-TB) program. Its primary goal is to speed up the development of hypersonic weapons, which can travel at speeds greater than Mach 5. Hypersonic technology is crucial for maintaining a tactical edge and countering advancements by countries like China and Russia, which are also investing heavily in this area. Therefore, the Pentagon’s decision underscores a strategic focus on hypersonic technology and its potential impact on national security.

Kratos, based in San Diego, will spearhead a team including major players such as Leidos, Rocket Lab, and Stratolaunch. Their collective effort aims to leverage commercial infrastructure and launch capabilities, increasing the frequency and effectiveness of hypersonic flight tests. The company’s responsibilities encompass systems engineering, integration, and both subscale and full-scale testing capacities.

George Rumford, director of the Test Resource Management Center at the Pentagon, highlighted the significance of this contract by stating, ‘This award represents the next phase of MACH-TB, a critical effort to accelerate the transition of cutting-edge hypersonic capabilities.’ This initiative will test experimental glide bodies and payloads on realistic operational paths using commercial launch setups.

Managed by the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, the MACH-TB program is designed to boost the capacity and regularity of ground and flight tests for hypersonic systems. It reflects a broader trend within the defense industry, where traditional defense contractors face healthy competition from commercial entities, including those previously focused on small launch vehicles. Facing competition from industry giants, these companies are pivoting to explore new avenues in hypersonic testing.

Quilty Space, a market research firm, estimates the hypersonic testing market to reach an annual worth of $6 billion to $7 billion. This represents a significant opportunity for dual-use propulsion technologies that can be employed in both defense and civilian applications. Hypersonic weapons, with their capacity to evade current missile defense systems, are considered vital for maintaining military superiority. Nevertheless, the complexity and high cost of testing these systems necessitate programs like MACH-TB to keep the United States competitive in this critical area.

This contract between Kratos and the Pentagon is set to advance the United States’ hypersonic capabilities, addressing the growing necessity for effective testing infrastructure. As global military dynamics evolve, investments such as these are pivotal in sustaining the nation’s defense posture.
