UN Human Rights Chief Calls for Lifting Sanctions on Syria

In a significant development, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called for the removal of Western sanctions against Syria following the ousting and exile of former leader Bashar Assad.

During his visit to Damascus, Türk emphasized the need for transitional justice to strengthen public trust in state institutions under new leadership. He stated, ‘Revenge and resentment are never the answer,’ following the deposition of the Assad family dynasty after insurgent groups took control of Damascus.

Türk held discussions with Ahmad al-Sharaa, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, who now heads the new authority in Syria. Al-Sharaa assured Türk of their commitment to upholding human rights for all Syrians, highlighting efforts for social cohesion and institutional reform.

The conflict, which began in early 2011, has resulted in nearly half a million deaths and displaced millions, with many now refugees. The extensive destruction caused by the war necessitates tens of billions of dollars for reconstruction.

Türk remarked on the necessity of international support, stating, ‘The people of Syria need all the help they can get to rebuild a country that works for all its citizens.’ He acknowledged existing threats to Syria’s territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty, calling for the cessation of ongoing hostilities.

European countries and the United States imposed sanctions on Assad’s government shortly after the conflict ignited. These nations remain cautious of the Islamist roots of the former insurgents now leading an interim government. Türk highlighted the impact of these sanctions on Syrian citizens, urging for an urgent reevaluation with the aim of lifting them.

Additionally, in recent developments, a Syrian Interior Ministry official reported the arrest of Egyptian militant Ahmad al-Mansour, known for posting videos that threatened to overthrow the Egyptian government. Al-Mansour, who had been living in Syria for years, was part of the forces that aided in Assad’s downfall. His detention may alleviate concerns in certain Arab countries, including Egypt, about Syria being used as a base for regional conspiracies.

The call by the UN’s top human rights official to reconsider sanctions on Syria marks a significant moment in its complex post-conflict recovery. This request underscores the need for international cooperation and support in rebuilding and stabilizing the nation.
