Get ready to uncover the secrets to a memorable adventure at one of the most unique national parks.

Visiting White Sands: Crowd Levels

Crowds matter, right? Most parks peak in summer, but not White Sands. Surprisingly, March tops the list, drawing nearly 100,000 visitors. April and May also see surges, with over 70,000 guests.

Looking for solitude? Try January or February. These months host the fewest visitors, around 40,000. Even August surprises with low crowd levels. How about September or November? They also offer a quieter experience.

Julie and I visited in March. Did the crowds affect our fun? Not really. We discovered two tips: arrive early and head straight to the park’s back. You’ll find great sand sledding spots there, with fewer people. It’s a win-win!

Cost Considerations for Your Visit

Is cost a factor for you? The park’s entry fee remains constant year-round. Accommodation prices, however, vary. Winter offers lower lodging rates, with January and February being the most budget-friendly.

Though winter is cost-effective, don’t dismiss other seasons. We found favorable lodging prices throughout the year in Alamogordo. Stay anytime, save money! Comparatively, it’s cheaper than many U.S. cities.

Weather can make or break your trip. Expect varied conditions throughout the year, often within a single day.

Summer in White Sands is the rainy season, with temperatures hitting 95°F to 110°F. Afternoons bring frequent thunderstorms, while nights cool off to 50-65°F. Be prepared for heat and showers.

Fall offers sunny days with light winds and temperatures around 80°F. The evenings cool down to approximately 40°F, providing a comfortable escape from the blistering summer heat.

Looking at winter? Expect daytime highs of 60°F and 23°F at night. Occasional storms bring rain or snow, adding charm to the park’s beauty.
