During an interview on Air Force One, Trump mentioned to the New York Post that he had discussions with Putin about ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. Without specifying the number of times they had communicated, Trump emphasized the urgent need to stop the bloodshed, describing the situation as a ‘bloodbath.’ He mentioned that his team has had ‘some very good talks’ with the Russian leader.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, when approached by TASS news agency, neither confirmed nor denied these reports, indicating that multiple lines of communication were being utilized. Peskov explained, ‘I personally may not know something, be unaware of something. Therefore, in this case, I can neither confirm nor deny it.’
The conflict dates back to 2014 following the installment of a pro-Russian president in Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea by Russia. The situation escalated in 2022 when Russia deployed troops to Ukraine, citing the need to protect Russian speakers and counter the potential threat posed by Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO.
