Pope Francis, 88, remains in the hospital following a diagnosis of a respiratory infection. After a restful night, he spent his morning reading newspapers and having breakfast, according to the Vatican.
The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis spent a second peaceful night in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for a respiratory infection. This update was provided by Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, who mentioned that more information would be released later in the day, though not necessarily with substantial medical details, given that it is a Sunday.
Pope Francis, known for his rigorous work schedule despite multiple health issues, was admitted on Friday after a week-long struggle with bronchitis worsened. This marks his fourth hospitalization since his papal election in 2013, raising concerns about his increasingly fragile health.
Doctors have identified a respiratory tract infection and have advised absolute rest alongside unspecified pharmacological therapies. Due to this, the Pope missed his traditional Sunday noon blessing and refrained from appearing at his hospital window to greet a small crowd gathered to wish him well.
Despite his absence, his social media handle, @Pontifex, managed by his team, expressed gratitude for the prayers and support: “Thank you for the affection, prayer, and closeness during these days,” the account posted.
Historically, Pope Francis has been susceptible to respiratory infections, having had part of a lung removed in his youth due to a severe lung infection. In 2023, he was hospitalized for three days with acute pneumonia. Despite a recent bronchitis diagnosis, he maintained a hectic schedule, fulfilling both private and public audiences and taking on additional responsibilities for the Holy Year of the Catholic Church.
In light of his current condition, the Vatican has canceled his engagements, at least until Monday. Moreover, a significant Holy Year Mass he was supposed to lead was instead presided over by the minister of culture for the Vatican.
The Vatican has yet to clarify the specifics of Pope Francis’s respiratory infection. Bronchitis can sometimes lead to pneumonia, a more severe lung infection. Treatments vary based on severity and might include oxygen administration, IV fluids, and addressing the infection’s root cause.
Pope Francis’s hospitalization has once again spotlighted his health challenges, but the Vatican’s updates suggest he is in stable condition. The global Catholic community continues to offer prayers and support during his recovery.
