A Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis faced a serious incident during its landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport, resulting in the aircraft flipping upside down on the runway. This incident is part of a troubling trend in recent air travel accidents.
On Monday, Delta Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, encountered a critical situation while attempting to land in Toronto. Fortunately, all 80 passengers and crew on board survived the crash. However, 18 individuals sustained injuries, including a child who is reported to be in good condition. The Toronto Hospital for Sick Children confirmed the child’s status, and some passengers have already been discharged from the hospital.
The incident follows a series of fatal air travel accidents over the past few months, including a recent regional airline crash in Alaska that claimed 10 lives and a mid-air collision near Washington DC that resulted in 67 fatalities. The Delta crash underscores the ongoing concerns about flight safety.
Passenger Pete Koukov described the harrowing experience, stating that he only realized something was wrong during the plane’s hard landing. ‘We hit the ground, and we were sideways, and then we were upside down hanging like bats,’ he recounted. Despite the chaos, Koukov managed to free himself, emphasizing a sense of relief and gratitude for surviving the ordeal.
Another passenger, John Nelson, echoed Koukov’s sentiments, describing the landing as an exceptionally hard hit accompanied by a ‘big fireball.’ The quick thinking and action of passengers and first responders helped prevent loss of life. Toronto Pearson’s President, Deborah Flint, praised the effective response of emergency teams during the crisis.
The aviation community is now focused on understanding the causes behind this and similar incidents. Both Canadian and U.S. aviation authorities are investigating the Delta crash, with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada leading the inquiry, supported by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration. According to fire chief Todd Aitken, despite gusty winds, there were no significant crosswind conditions, and the runway was dry at the time of the incident.
In light of these investigations, Delta and Endeavor Air’s leadership are cooperating fully with authorities to determine what occurred. Meanwhile, affected runways at Toronto Pearson will remain closed as examinations continue.
