A Delta Air Lines flight headed to Columbia, South Carolina, had to make an unexpected return to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after haze was detected in the cabin, prompting immediate safety procedures.
The incident occurred shortly after the Boeing 717 departed from Atlanta. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the flight crew observed possible smoke in the flight deck, leading to swift action to return the aircraft to the airport around 9 a.m. The plane was carrying 94 passengers, three flight attendants, and two pilots.
Emergency slides were deployed on the runway for evacuation as a precautionary measure, according to Delta Air Lines. “The flight crew followed procedures to return to Atlanta when a haze inside the aircraft was observed after departure,” a Delta spokesperson stated. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologize to our customers for the experience.”
Passenger accounts provided further insight into the situation. Johnny, a passenger, noted that, “when the plane took off it began to fill up with haze and it was hard to breathe at times.” Meanwhile, another passenger, Kristin Morris, described the emergence of haze five to ten minutes into the flight, saying, “A few of us passengers started to question why or what was going on. People started screaming ‘smoke, smoke, smoke.'”

Morris recalled that the aircraft remained airborne for about 20 minutes under the circumstances before landing back in Atlanta. Once on the ground, Atlanta Fire Rescue assisted in the safe deplaning of all passengers and crew members.
Following the incident, passengers were temporarily held in a conference room as Delta investigated the cause of the haze. Despite the anxious wait for answers, passengers were eventually released without a definitive explanation for the haze. Delta assured that teams were on hand to help rebook flights to passengers’ final destinations.
