Plantation Resident Charged in Fatal Sunrise Crash

A man from Broward County faces serious charges following a fatal accident that occurred last month. The incident took place shortly before 6 p.m. on March 11 at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Northwest Eighth Street in Sunrise, Florida. Upon arriving at the scene, police found both vehicles involved in the collision severely damaged.

The accused, identified as 49-year-old Pablo Baquero, was driving a 2015 Tesla, while the victim, 37-year-old Melissa Dume, was operating a 2021 GMC Terrain. Upon arrival, authorities discovered Dume trapped inside her vehicle. Emergency crews administered life-saving measures, as she did not have a pulse, before transporting her to Broward Health Medical Center. Sadly, Dume was pronounced dead on March 14, never regaining consciousness after the crash.

Investigators determined that the collision occurred as Dume attempted a left turn onto Eighth Street and was struck by Baquero’s vehicle. Police concluded that Baquero was driving at 90 mph, greatly exceeding the posted speed limit of 45 mph, in a densely populated area near Sawgrass Mills Mall during peak hours.

Surveillance footage, including red light cameras and a Tesla vehicle camera, revealed that Baquero’s high speed and abrupt lane change indicated an attempt to beat the traffic light at Northwest Eighth Street. An arrest report further indicated that a 15-year-old passenger was in the front seat of Baquero’s vehicle, neither of whom suffered injuries in the crash. Baquero is currently held without bond and faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide.
