Tacoma and Washington State Launch New E-Bike Rebate Programs

Residents of Washington state have the opportunity to apply for the newly introduced e-bike instant rebate program, WE-bike, managed by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). This initiative will make available approximately 10,000 e-bike rebates across the state. Additionally, the City of Tacoma is offering 450 rebates specifically for residents living in communities significantly affected by air quality issues. Tacoma’s local rebate eligibility aligns with the statewide program, allowing applicants to be considered for both with a single application.

These e-bike rebate programs will commence on April 9 and remain open for applications until April 23 at noon. This initiative is seen as a significant investment in both bike infrastructure and safety, aiming to encourage more residents to consider e-bikes as a sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions as part of broader climate action goals.

Eligible residents in Tacoma and statewide may receive a rebate of either $1,200 or $300, based on household income. Rebates can be redeemed at select pre-approved bike shops for e-bike models that meet specific program criteria, with a limit of one rebate per household. To qualify, applicants must be at least 16 years old, reside in Washington state, provide necessary contact and demographic information, and possess an email address. Those seeking Tacoma-specific rebates must live in designated overburdened communities within the city.

The application process, available in both English and Spanish, will open for two weeks from April 9, 2025, to April 23, 2025, and due to anticipated high demand, rebates will be distributed via a raffle system once the application period concludes.

Funded by the Washington State Department of Ecology through the Climate Commitment Act, these programs aim to make e-bikes more accessible and affordable, supporting the state’s broader efforts to reduce climate pollution, create jobs, and enhance public health.
