BSO Detention Deputy Allegedly Slaps Woman, Assaults Her with Belt

A detention deputy from the Broward Sheriff’s Office was taken into custody on Monday, following a domestic violence incident reported in Dania Beach. Authorities disclosed the arrest of David Powell, aged 30, without confirming the precise relationship between him and the female victim. The incident was reported at approximately 7:20 p.m., with deputies responding to the scene shortly thereafter.

Officials revealed that upon the deputies’ arrival, Powell admitted to having a verbal altercation with the woman involved. However, further investigation uncovered allegations of physical abuse. It was revealed that Powell forcefully slapped the victim in the face and ear, resulting in temporary hearing loss and inflicted additional harm by beating her with a belt multiple times. Medical examinations at a nearby hospital documented significant injuries that necessitated hospitalization.

The victim reportedly informed detectives that the abuse was not an isolated incident, claiming it had been ongoing since March 2024. Subsequently, Powell faced charges of three counts of aggravated battery, one count of felony battery, and four counts of domestic battery. Additionally, a risk protection order was issued against him, leading to the confiscation of several firearms in his possession.

Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony emphasized the gravity of domestic violence, stating it severely impacts the safety and well-being of individuals and families. He assured that any breach of law by members of the community, including agency employees, will be met with accountability. Sheriff Tony urged victims of domestic violence to seek help by contacting emergency services.

Powell, who joined the Broward Sheriff’s Office on December 6, 2021, is presently on administrative leave without pay. He remains in custody at the Broward County Main Jail with a bond set at $565,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
