Maui Physician Denies Attempted Murder Charge Against Wife

A Maui anesthesiologist, aged 46, has entered a plea of not guilty to charges alleging an attempted murder of his wife on an Oahu hiking trail. The incident reportedly stemmed from accusations of infidelity. The accused, Gerhardt Konig, was indicted by an Oahu grand jury on March 28 and faces charges of second-degree attempted murder. He is currently being held without bail, although a motion to set bail will be presented to the trial division, as noted in state court records.

The defense attorney emphasized that the not-guilty plea reflects a meaningful response to the serious allegations. The attorney hinted that the defense narrative will be fully revealed during the court proceedings, suggesting that the story has only partially surfaced at this stage.

The accused’s wife, Arielle Konig, aged 36, has petitioned the court for a temporary restraining order, seeking protection for herself, the couple’s two young children, her parents, and the family dog. She expressed fears that Konig might attempt further harm if released prior to the trial. According to Arielle, her husband became excessively jealous and controlling after accusing her of adultery in December, leading to the couple engaging in counseling sessions.

The alleged attack occurred on March 24 when Konig reportedly lured his wife to the cliff’s edge under the guise of taking a selfie. He then allegedly attempted to push her off the edge, and, when unsuccessful, purportedly tried to inject her with an unknown substance using syringes. Further accusations include striking her with a rock, resulting in severe injuries, and forcefully smashing her face into the ground. The assault was witnessed by two individuals on the trail who alerted authorities by calling 911.

Court documents reveal that Konig allegedly contacted his eldest son from a previous relationship, admitting to the attempted murder. Meanwhile, a fundraising effort for Arielle Konig has gathered $4,699 to date.
