The man involved in a tragic altercation between two motorcycle clubs has been sentenced following a guilty plea to manslaughter. At Cumberland County Superior Court, Aaron Karp, 48, from Portland, appeared for sentencing, where he received a five-year prison term. Initially charged with murder, the prosecution accepted the possibility that Karp could argue self-defense in court. This decision stems from a confrontation that resulted in the death of 54-year-old Susan McHugh from Gray.
During a high-security hearing, it was revealed that Karp was one of seven suspects linked to the attack. Susan McHugh’s family, described as being close friends with Karp’s family, expressed their grief through emotional statements, highlighting McHugh’s dedication as a mother and grandmother. However, despite their hope for a longer sentence, Judge John O’Neil emphasized that Karp could still face up to 15 years if he fails to comply with probation conditions.
In the courtroom, Karp acknowledged the charge and entered his plea, expressing remorse through his attorney, Verne Paradie, who stated that the incident was an avoidable tragedy. McHugh’s death occurred after a conflict escalated into violence, linked to disagreements over club affiliations. The fight, which began over club colors, resulted in McHugh firing a shot before Karp was seen on surveillance shooting nine times in her direction. Other involved parties also faced charges, with ongoing legal proceedings expected for some.
