Beltrami County Historical Society to Launch ‘Media Makers’ Program

A free public panel discussion titled “Media Makers: The Women Informing Our Community” is scheduled for Saturday, April 19, at 10 a.m. at the Beltrami County History Center, located at 130 Minnesota Ave. SW. Hosted by the Beltrami County Historical Society, this event will spotlight the contributions of local women in the media industry. The panel will delve into topics such as media representation, mentorship, community impact, and the evolution of local journalism to better serve northern Minnesota.

The panel features prominent figures including Larissa Donovan, a Bemidji-area reporter for KAXE/KBXE Northern Community Radio and previous news director at Paul Bunyan Broadcasting; Annalise Braught, editor and photojournalist for the Bemidji Pioneer with a degree from Bemidji State University’s Mass Communication program; and Meghan Jewett, the Program and Production Manager at Lakeland PBS, who manages local productions like Common Ground and Backroads.

These panelists will share their personal journeys and career insights, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities that women face in media. They will also provide advice to young women aspiring to careers in journalism, radio, or television. Attendees will have the chance to engage with the panelists through a question-and-answer segment.

Emily Thabes, the executive director of the Beltrami County Historical Society, expressed pride in showcasing these influential voices as part of their series honoring the contributions of women in Beltrami County to both historical and contemporary community life. She emphasized the unique chance to hear from those who are integral in ensuring the community remains informed.
