Traffic Stop in Darke County Uncovers Over 30 Grams of Meth and Cocaine

Authorities in Darke County discovered over 30 grams of illegal substances during a routine traffic stop. On April 11, around 2:15 p.m., sheriff’s deputies conducted a stop on an SUV traveling along State Route 49 near Hollansburg-Sampson Road, citing a speed violation.

During the procedure, deputies utilized K9 Oakley, a specially trained drug-detecting dog, to conduct an air sniff of the vehicle. K9 Oakley indicated the presence of narcotics, prompting deputies to perform a search of the SUV. This search resulted in the discovery of approximately 29 grams of methamphetamines and 1.5 grams of cocaine.

Following the search, deputies arrested 45-year-old Richard Armfield of Greenville, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Armfield faces charges for two counts of drug possession, with one charge classified as a second-degree felony and the other as a fifth-degree felony. In addition to the drugs, authorities seized $730 in cash, which they suspect is connected to the drug activity. Armfield is currently held in the Darke County Jail, awaiting his arraignment in the Darke County Court.

The Impact on Community and Law Enforcement

The discovery of narcotics during this traffic stop underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating drug-related activities within local communities. The presence of controlled substances like methamphetamines poses significant risks not only to individuals but also to public safety and community well-being.

The successful intervention by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office highlights the importance of vigilant policing and the effectiveness of K9 units in drug detection. This operation potentially prevents further distribution of dangerous drugs within the area, contributing to community safety and reducing the public health risks associated with drug use. Additionally, it serves as a reminder of the persistent issues surrounding drug trafficking, prompting community members to remain informed and supportive of law enforcement efforts.
