A human trafficking network responsible for smuggling Moroccan migrants into Spain and other European Union countries has been dismantled in southern Spain, as announced by government officials on Sunday. The Spanish authorities revealed that the organization targeted Moroccan nationals seeking to migrate to Spain, initially flying them to Romania. From Romania, the migrants were transported overland to Spain through various EU countries, concealed inside trucks or vans.
The Spanish Civil Guard reported that the trafficking network conducted over 50 trips to Spain over a two-year span, transporting groups of 20 to 50 migrants each time. Migrants were charged €3,000 per person for the journey. During a recent raid in the city of Cartagena, located in the Murcia region, four individuals were arrested on charges of belonging to a criminal organization and human trafficking.
The network’s logistics were allegedly coordinated from Romania, where the gang’s leader acted as a liaison among members in Spain, Morocco, and Romania. This leader was responsible for setting the prices migrants had to pay and organizing the travel logistics. To evade law enforcement, the traffickers employed shuttle vehicles and passed through border crossings with minimal surveillance.
The operation was conducted in collaboration with Europol and the Frontex European Border and Coast Guard Agency, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in tackling human trafficking.
