Spanish authorities have detained two individuals linked to the online sale of exotic felines. During a recent operation in Manacor on Mallorca, part of the Balearic Islands, police confiscated 19 animals, including a caracal and two servals, as announced by the Civil Guard. Additionally, over 40 irregular animal passports from nations such as Russia, Belarus, and China were uncovered.
The investigation commenced in March of the previous year when the Civil Guard identified a couple in Palma de Mallorca engaged in breeding servals, caracals, and hybrids with domestic cats for sale on social media platforms. The suspects reportedly advertised exotic animals like white tigers and clouded leopards, with prices reaching 60,000 euros (approximately $68,000), alongside Eurasian lynxes, hyenas, black leopards, and pumas.
This activity reflects a broader trend seen in Russia and Ukraine, which has begun to take root in other countries as well. The seized animals will be relocated to a specialized rescue and rehabilitation center for exotic mammals located in Alicante, eastern Spain.
