Volusia County ‘Xbox Murders’ Resentencing Set to Start Next Week

The process of selecting a jury for the resentencing of two individuals convicted in a highly publicized murder case is scheduled to commence next week. Troy Victorino, age 48, and Jerone Hunter, age 38, are set to return to court after their previous death penalties were annulled in 2017. The selection will take place on Monday morning at the Volusia County Courthouse, under the supervision of Judge Dawn Nichols. Once the jury is finalized, testimony will proceed.

Victorino and Hunter were found guilty of murder in 2008 in connection to the infamous “Xbox murders.” Prosecutors allege that the pair, alongside two accomplices, were responsible for the deaths of six individuals and a dog in 2004, driven by the theft of an Xbox they claimed was stolen. Victorino was identified as the leader in what has been described as a brutal massacre. Although both were initially sentenced to death, their sentences were overturned due to the lack of unanimity among the jurors. Resentencing was originally planned for 2023.

The Impact on the Community

The upcoming resentencing of Victorino and Hunter may evoke a range of emotions within the community, as residents reflect on the violent events of 2004. Community members may feel a sense of closure or apprehension as the judicial process seeks to re-evaluate the appropriate sentence for the convicted individuals. There could be renewed discussions about crime prevention, justice, and the impact of such events on community safety and well-being.

For the families of the victims, the resentencing offers another opportunity to seek justice and perhaps find some degree of solace. The proceedings could reignite the trauma and grief associated with the loss of their loved ones. On a broader scale, this case may influence public opinion on the death penalty and the justice system’s ability to administer fair and consistent sentences.
