A woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison following a tragic incident last year in Spokane, where she fatally stabbed a man and injured her mother. Kelly M. Hyde, aged 35, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the death of David Johnson, 61, and to first-degree assault for injuring Jacqueline Mattingly during an altercation on June 5 at a mobile home in the West Hills Neighborhood.
Court documents reveal that Johnson and Mattingly were married. The event unfolded when firefighters responded to a call for medical assistance at the 5300 block of West Sunset Boulevard. Upon arrival, they discovered Mattingly with ten stab wounds to her head and Johnson deceased inside the mobile home.
According to court records, the incident began when Hyde got into a physical altercation with Johnson. During the fight, Johnson allegedly pinned her to the trailer floor and covered her mouth, impeding her ability to breathe, prompting Hyde to stab him. Hyde’s mother, Mattingly, attempted to intervene during the struggle but was injured in the process.
The sentence, a joint recommendation by the prosecution and defense, was handed down by Spokane County Superior Court Judge Charnelle Bjelkengren. Judge Bjelkengren also mandated that Hyde, who has no prior felony convictions, will serve three years of probation following her release from prison.
