A man from the Florida Keys is facing serious legal repercussions after an incident involving a knife and theft at a convenience store. Authorities report that the confrontation began early Thursday morning when the man was accused of stealing a bag of Chex Mix from a store on Stock Island.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office detailed the events, which occurred around 2 a.m. at a Tom Thumb location on Maloney Avenue. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Johnathan Charles Shiadek of Marathon, reportedly entered the store, proceeded to drink a Mountain Dew, and accidentally knocked over a display of donuts. He then allegedly took a bag of Chex Mix and exited without payment.
According to deputies, the clerk and two customers followed Shiadek outside, prompting him to brandish a box cutter and allegedly swing it at them. This alarming behavior led several witnesses to call 911 as Shiadek moved towards U.S. 1.
Upon arrival, deputies were directed to Shiadek’s location near Second Street. They detained him and discovered the box cutter. Shiadek reportedly had a cut on his right hand, which he claimed was self-inflicted by accident. He attempted to justify his actions by asserting that he felt threatened and surrounded by the store personnel and customers.
The report from the authorities notes that Shiadek believed he was being cornered, leading to his decision to pull out the knife. He stated that he did not initially carry the knife as a weapon but would resort to using it if necessary. Shiadek claimed that during the confrontation, he felt compelled to chase one of the individuals down the street over fears of losing a physical altercation.
Ultimately, Shiadek was arrested and charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and being a felon in possession of a weapon. Additionally, he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. As of the latest reports, Shiadek was held at the Key West jail facility without bond.
