Dunmore Woman Causes Disturbance During Political Debate at Tavern, Police Report

A woman in Dunmore faced charges following an incident at a local tavern where she allegedly refused to cease disruptive political outbursts and resisted law enforcement officers. The individual, identified as 54-year-old Bernadette Warner of East Warren Street, is accused of disorderly conduct and harassment.

The situation unfolded around 9:30 p.m. on April 12 at Kuzzin’s Cafe, located on East Drinker Street. Police were called to the scene in response to reports of a patron attempting to assault staff members. Upon arrival, officers encountered Warner outside the establishment. She reportedly exhibited signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech.

Despite requests to move away from the tavern’s entrance, Warner allegedly refused and began reaching into her jacket pocket. Officers attempted to guide her across the street to discuss the incident, but she resisted. Consequently, she was handcuffed and taken aside for questioning. The tavern’s owner recounted that Warner had been asked to lower her voice during a heated political discussion. When informed that no further alcohol would be served, Warner allegedly became agitated and attempted to strike a staff member.

Warner, however, claimed she had arrived at the bar around 9 p.m. and consumed three beers. She asserted that the staff initiated the confrontation by shouting at her during the political disagreement. She denied any physical aggression, stating, “I did nothing wrong.” Upon being informed of her arrest, Warner allegedly resisted walking to the police vehicle and later refused to exit the car upon reaching Dunmore Police Headquarters. During processing, she reportedly kicked an officer and continued disruptive behavior while secured in a holding cell.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 23 at 9:45 a.m. before District Judge Alyce Farrell.

The Implications of Public Disorder

Incidents such as the one involving Bernadette Warner highlight the potential consequences of public disorder, particularly in community settings like local taverns. For businesses, disturbances can lead to reputational damage, impacting their relationship with patrons and potentially affecting their bottom line. Establishments may need to review and reinforce their policies on handling disruptive behavior, ensuring the safety and comfort of all customers.

For individuals, engaging in disruptive conduct can result in legal repercussions, as evidenced by the charges against Warner. It serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining composure in public spaces and respecting communal environments. Such incidents can also strain community resources, as law enforcement must allocate time and personnel to address the situation, which might otherwise be directed towards other community needs.
