How to Add a REAL ID to Your iPhone: Assistance Available

Many individuals are encountering difficulties in fully verifying their Hawaii REAL ID driver’s licenses as digital IDs in their Apple Wallets. A common issue arises when users are prompted to input a verification code, which they have not received. Contrary to some expectations, this code is not sent by Apple but by the DMV via mail. Users can proceed with the verification process once the code is received, assuming they have not canceled their request.

There have been frequent reports of challenges from individuals trying to add their REAL ID-compliant Hawaii driver’s license or state ID to their Apple devices, such as iPhones (iPhone 8 or newer) or Apple Watches. The Hawaii Department of Transportation provides detailed instructions and troubleshooting tips on its website to assist users. Key information includes:

  • Verification Code Prompt: If prompted to enter a verification code, it indicates that your County Driver License Office requires additional verification. The office will mail this code to your registered address, which may take three to four weeks. Entering this code in Apple Wallet is necessary for completing the verification.
  • Non-receipt of Verification Code: If the code is not received within the expected time frame, users should contact their County Driver License Office via email:
  • Entering the Verification Code: Once the verification code is received, it can be entered by navigating to Apple Wallet, selecting the plus icon, choosing Driver’s License or State ID, and then selecting Hawaii.

Most users report receiving the mailed verification code within a week or so, though it is not required for all individuals to wait for this code to complete the verification. The digital ID serves as a secure companion to the physical card, but it does not replace the physical driver’s license or identification card. Individuals must continue to carry their physical cards.

In a different context, there has been considerable interest in sterilization programs for pets. While there are several options for the free sterilization of cats, similar programs for dogs have seen changes. The Neuter Now program, originally offering subsidized spay/neuter services to all pet owners, has been restricted to low-income pet owners receiving government assistance. Currently, the program is suspended due to high demand surpassing available funding from the City and County of Honolulu. The Hawaiian Humane Society, however, still offers low-cost sterilization surgeries through its clinic, independent of Neuter Now, supported by donor contributions.
