Investigators Examine Possible Motives Behind Attack on Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence

The district attorney in Pennsylvania is investigating a potential religious or political bias in the case of a man accused of setting fire to Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence. Authorities are examining whether the suspect, Cody Balmer, who allegedly expressed hatred towards Shapiro, a Jewish Democratic leader, was motivated by such biases.

Cody Balmer is accused of breaking into the Harrisburg home during the early hours of Sunday and setting fire using two gasoline-filled beer bottles. Although the incident caused extensive damage, no injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing as officials attempt to understand the duration and nature of Balmer’s animosity towards Shapiro.

The police affidavit referenced a comment from Balmer about the treatment of Palestinian people, further fueling investigations into religious or political motives. Officials emphasized that resolving differences through violence is unacceptable, regardless of the underlying bias.

Governor Shapiro has stated that it is up to the prosecutors to determine Balmer’s motive, refraining from speculating on the reasons behind the attack. Investigation efforts include examining Balmer’s electronic devices for references to Shapiro, Israel, Palestinians, or Gaza.

Although Balmer could face charges under Pennsylvania’s hate crime law, it would not alter his current charges of first-degree felonies, which are already severe. Balmer remains jailed on charges that include attempted homicide, arson, assault, and burglary.

Family members describe Balmer, an unemployed 38-year-old welder, as having a history of mental illness and sometimes neglecting treatment for bipolar disorder. Following the fire, Balmer called 911, though police reports reveal his statements were ambiguous.

Balmer’s court-appointed attorneys might request a delay in the preliminary hearing to assess his competence to stand trial. The defense must demonstrate that Balmer is unable to assist in his defense, as opposed to claiming insanity based on his mental state during the alleged crimes.

In response to security concerns, state police have hired an independent team led by a former state police commissioner to conduct a security review. Balmer reportedly bypassed security by climbing over a fence and breaking windows before igniting the fire.

The attack took place shortly after Shapiro’s family had observed Passover in the residence, prompting state troopers to evacuate them safely amid the blaze causing millions of dollars in damage. The investigation continues as authorities seek to understand the motives and implications of the incident.
