The steel industry in Selkirk, Manitoba, is facing a period of uncertainty as tensions rise due to the imposition of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump. The recently imposed 25-percent tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports have caused concern among Selkirk residents, who fear the impact on their local economy.
Selkirk, often referred to as a “steel city,” relies heavily on its steel industry, with the Gerdau Ameristeel Manitoba steel mill playing a pivotal role. This industry is crucial for the local economy, providing jobs for over 500 residents in the town of approximately 10,000. Many in the community, like Joen Hadfield—a 71-year-old retiree deeply rooted in Selkirk—express concern over the potential ramifications of these tariffs.
The steel mill, originally established as the Manitoba Rolling Mills Company in Winnipeg in 1907, relocated to Selkirk five years later. It has since experienced various financial ups and downs, notably closing its doors during the Great Depression. In 1995, Gerdau Ameristeel, a global steel producer, acquired the mill, which remains a significant employer in the area.
Mayor Larry Johannson recalls the city’s resilience during previous tariff threats in 2018, which did not result in layoffs at the mill. However, the current situation appears more uncertain. He emphasizes the importance of the U.S. market, as over 70 percent of Selkirk’s steel production is exported south of the border.
In response to the challenges, Premier Wab Kinew has announced a $1.5-million grant to support businesses affected by the tariffs. Additionally, the provincial government is prioritizing the use of Canadian steel in its projects, a move echoed by Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, who advocates for formalizing such commitments in procurement policies.
Meanwhile, other steel-related businesses in Selkirk, such as Castle Metals and Karrich Industries, remain vigilant. Castle Metals, which operates globally and serves various industries, is experiencing a slight slowdown but maintains an optimistic outlook.
The uncertainty surrounding the trade relationship and its implications for the local economy is a pressing concern for Selkirk’s residents and officials.
