Protests unfolded across the nation on Saturday, with downtown Miami becoming one of the focal points for the demonstrations against President Donald Trump. A gathering was initiated outside the Torch of Friendship at Bayfront Park, where organizers anticipated a large turnout.
The demonstrations were fueled by concerns over issues such as immigration, democracy, education, climate change, veterans’ rights, and national security. This national “Day of Action” mirrored similar protests held in South Florida and across the United States in early April.
Participants of the protest brandished signs with slogans such as “Dump Trump” and “I’m here fighting for your due process,” referencing recent legal decisions regarding the administration’s deportation policies to a detention center in El Salvador. Many attendees expressed that the current administration had let the public down. Demonstrators emphasized their commitment to voicing dissent and supporting vulnerable communities, with some comparing the administration’s actions to authoritarian tactics observed in Cuba.
One participant displayed a sign reading, “Cuba taught us: Freedom is never guaranteed. I’m losing my country again,” highlighting fears of losing democratic freedoms. Another placard criticized U.S. Representative Carlos Gimenez, indicating a sense of betrayal felt by some in the Cuban-American community.
The protest was slated to extend into the afternoon, as participants continued to advocate for their causes and engage in community outreach efforts.
