Outpouring of Grief and Sympathy for International Student Tragically Killed by Stray Bullet in Hamilton

Expressions of grief have emerged following the tragic death of Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old international college student, who was mistakenly killed by gunfire in Hamilton. Randhawa, originally from India’s Punjab province and a student at Mohawk College, was standing at a city bus stop when she was struck by a stray bullet during an alleged exchange of gunfire between two vehicles.

The incident occurred Thursday evening near Upper James Street and South Bend Road. Hamilton Police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered Randhawa with a gunshot wound to her chest. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she was pronounced dead later that night. Authorities allege that the fatal shot was fired from a black Mercedes SUV targeting a white sedan, both of which fled the scene. The gunfire also shattered a window of a nearby home, but fortunately, its occupants were unharmed.

The death of Randhawa has prompted heartfelt reactions from various quarters. Hamilton Mayor Andrea Howarth expressed profound sorrow, describing the violence as devastating for the community. She extended condolences to Randhawa’s family on behalf of the city’s council and residents.

At Mohawk College, the loss of Randhawa has been deeply felt. College President Paul Armstrong lamented the untimely death of a promising young student, extending thoughts and prayers to those affected by the tragedy.

The Indian consulate in Toronto also acknowledged the incident, expressing deep sadness and pledging support and assistance to Randhawa’s family during this difficult time.

As the homicide investigation continues, Hamilton Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
