Nina Johnson, a key figure at Bemidji State University, has been recognized as the 2025 Service Faculty of the Year by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees. Her outstanding contributions were celebrated during a statewide ceremony on April 16 in St. Paul. Over the years, Johnson has been instrumental in fostering student-focused leadership, driving innovation, and upholding a strong commitment to service at the university.

Since starting her journey with Bemidji State University in 2013, Johnson has made significant strides in transforming the Hobson Memorial Union into an environment that prioritizes inclusivity and student needs. Her promotion to director in 2017 allowed her to implement the Entrepreneurial Operating System, enhancing operational focus and accountability. This initiative, alongside the establishment of a student advisory board, has enabled targeted facility upgrades and programming improvements.

In 2019, Johnson collaborated with the United Way of Bemidji Area to launch Bucky’s Cupboard, a campus food pantry aimed at tackling student food insecurity. Her efforts have ensured long-term funding through the BSU Alumni and Foundation, while her coordination of the Hunger-Free Campus Task Force has heightened awareness of food insecurity issues among students.

Johnson’s commitment to student wellbeing is further highlighted by her early adoption of gender-neutral restrooms and the provision of menstrual products in all union restrooms, setting a precedent before state mandates came into effect. Her dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion has established the Hobson Memorial Union as a supportive and welcoming space for all students.

Beyond her direct work with students, Johnson has played an integral role within the BSU community. Her leadership roles have included serving as president of the MSUAASF campus chapter from 2021 to 2024, advising the Student Senate and the Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee, and participating in various committees such as the Budget Advisory Group, dining services committee, and Bias Incident Response Team. She also emphasizes professional growth by completing certifications in mental health first aid, becoming a 7 Habits trainer, and conducting workshops for staff.

The Minnesota State Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in University Service is the highest recognition for administrative service faculty within the system. Johnson’s selection from a pool of Outstanding Service Faculty underscores her excellence in leadership, expertise, advancement of equity and inclusion, professional development, and commitment to student success.
