A suspect has been apprehended in connection with a shooting over the weekend in downtown Fort Lauderdale, which resulted in a man suffering life-threatening injuries. The incident, confirmed by authorities on Monday, led to the arrest of Willis Anthony Rellanos, age 39. Jail records indicate that Rellanos was admitted to the Broward County Main Jail on Sunday and is facing a charge of premeditated attempted murder.
Police reported that they responded to a shooting call just before 5 a.m. on Saturday, located in the 300 block of Southwest First Avenue. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a man with gunshot wounds. The victim was subsequently transported by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue to Broward Health Medical Center, where he remains hospitalized. His identity has not been disclosed to the public.
Rellanos stayed at the scene of the incident and was detained while detectives began their investigation. During his court appearance on Monday morning, Rellanos required the assistance of a Spanish interpreter. Prosecutors successfully petitioned for the suspect to be held without bond, a decision that was upheld by the judge. A pre-trial detention hearing is scheduled for Saturday.
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is yet to release Rellanos’ arrest report, and the motive behind the shooting remains undisclosed. The investigation continues as authorities seek to uncover further details surrounding the case.
