Condo Fire in South Anchorage Forces Evacuation of Residents from Five Units

A significant fire erupted at the Blackberry Condominiums in Anchorage late on Saturday, April 19, 2025, displacing eight residents from five units by Monday. The blaze occurred in a 24-unit apartment complex on Blackberry Street, prompting a two-alarm response from the Anchorage Fire Department. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although a cat was successfully rescued from one of the affected units.

Firefighters reported that two units suffered extensive fire damage, while others incurred water damage. The American Red Cross of Alaska promptly responded, providing essential support to the displaced individuals, including blankets, snacks, water, and financial aid as of Monday.

While the precise cause of the fire remains under investigation, the incident was part of a series of fires over the weekend. Notably, on Friday night, another fire call was made to Askeland Drive. During this response, a vehicle drove over a 5-inch hose used as a water supply line for a fire engine, endangering the firefighting efforts. The driver involved was cited for crossing a fire hose, and the affected hose has been taken out of service.
