Race Director Celebrates Success of 70th Westfield River Wildwater Races

The 70th Westfield River Wildwater Races, held on April 19, attracted approximately 293 paddlers, making it a day of joy and excitement due to the favorable weather conditions. Large crowds gathered along the riverbanks, reminiscent of earlier times when such events drew significant public interest. Spectators lined bridges and riverbanks, cheering on participants with the help of cowbells, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Families also took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy picnics in nearby backyards overlooking the river.

The race organizers, prioritizing safety, ensured a well-coordinated emergency response plan. The Westfield Police cadets monitored the river, while safety kayakers and rescue teams were strategically positioned along the course. A command center was established at Russell Police headquarters to manage any potential emergencies, although the event proceeded smoothly without medical incidents.

The success of the races was attributed to the outstanding cooperation between the towns of Russell and Huntington. The local Police and Fire departments, along with the Board of Selectmen from both towns, were instrumental in the event’s execution. The Hilltown Ambulance Service had ambulances on standby, although fortunately, their services were not required.

Gratitude was extended to the Army Corps of Engineers for the use of the Knightville Dam for scheduled water release, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for providing their Route 112 maintenance yard as a staging area, and the Route 20 pull-off for the Expert Race finish line. The Hilltown Community Health Center offered parking facilities for racers and spectators, while support also came from the Massachusetts State Police and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

A sweep kayak followed the last boater, ensuring the river was clear before tabulating results and distributing awards in a timely manner, improving upon previous years. The race director acknowledged the dedication of numerous volunteers who contributed to the event’s seamless execution, emphasizing their commitment to the community and the event’s success.

The Westfield River Wildwater Races not only continued a cherished Hilltown tradition but also provided a platform for competitive spirit and community camaraderie. Organizers are already looking forward to next year’s event, eager to build on this year’s triumph.
