A Look at the History of One of Miami's Most Iconic Hotels

News that the Riviera Hotel Company has received a building permit for a three-story brick building in 1939 has the city in an uproar. The $103,000 project, with 22 residential units and retail stores on both streets, is a massive undertaking. The architects, John and Coulton Skinner, have their hands full. For the first ten years, the building was called the Riviera Hotel, according to city records dating back to 1949.
The soaring, curved facades on the east and south sides of the building, with their dramatic eyebrows and racing stripes, give it a modern, refined look. The corner parapet is raised high, decorated with a low-relief medallion, and topped by a flagpole - making the whole building even more imposing.
In 1942, the Riviera was among hundreds of Miami Beach buildings used by U.S. Army Air Forces for military exercises. Tourists were turned away and hotels became barracks, restaurants served as dining halls, theaters became classrooms and thousands of new recruits trained daily on the beaches, streets and golf courses.
In 1950, the Riviera was transformed into the luxurious Bentley Hotel, which it remains today. While the exterior retains its historic charm, the interior was spruced up in 2020. The redesigned furnishings of the spacious guest rooms pay homage to the vibrant Art Deco style of Miami Beach!
