According to data from Adobe and Salesforce, Cyber Monday saw American consumers spending between $12.8 billion and $13.3 billion, surpassing last year’s record despite only modest percentage increases. The deep discounts offered—such as an average of 30% off electronics and 39% off apparel—played a significant role in driving these sales. This trend was evident not only for electronics and clothing but also for luxury products, which saw significant upticks as consumers capitalized on planned purchases during this key shopping day.
Caila Schwartz, Salesforce’s director of consumer insights, described Cyber Monday as a prime discount day. Many consumers, still feeling the impacts of inflation, were drawn to spend by impressive markdowns and strategic purchases, suggesting a cautious but opportunistic consumer mindset. This sentiment echoes the insights shared by major retailers in recent earnings calls, underscoring a sustained willingness to spend on essential and awaited items during significant sales events.
Interestingly, the average purchase value landed at $124, with the typical buyer acquiring about 3.5 items per transaction. A notable shift observed was the increased use of mobile devices for shopping; over three-fourths of all website visits and more than half of the sales originated from mobile platforms, signaling a growing comfort among consumers in using their phones for high-value transactions.
The heightened activity wasn’t limited to Cyber Monday but extended over Cyber Week, with significant growth in Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales. Vivek Pandya of Adobe Digital Insights noted that early discounts throughout Cyber Week encouraged consumers to shop ahead of Cyber Monday, which served as a final opportunity to seize substantial deals.
Although the most significant discounts have tapered off, the momentum from Cyber Monday sets a positive tone for the season. Adobe projects US holiday sales to exceed $240 billion, marking an 8.4% increase from last year, while Salesforce anticipates around 8% growth, pointing to an expected record-breaking season.
