Elon Musk to Open STEM-Focused Preschool in Texas

Elon Musk is venturing into early childhood education with the establishment of a private preschool in Texas, named Ad Astra. Scheduled to open in 2025, the school is founded on Musk’s vision of a STEM-centric curriculum designed for young learners aged three to nine.

Located in Bastrop, Texas, the Ad Astra preschool aims to immerse students in a hands-on, project-based learning environment. This initiative is set to offer a STEM-oriented education, encouraging students to explore and solve real-world challenges through sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The focus is not just on academic knowledge but also on practical applications, which aligns with Musk’s broader educational philosophy.

Ad Astra has already been granted the necessary initial permit by the Texas Health and Human Services Department, which was obtained in November 2024. This permit allows the preschool to open with a student capacity of 21 for its inaugural year. As an added incentive, tuition for this first year will be subsidized, with subsequent tuition rates matching those of local private schools.

While Musk’s personal involvement is discreet, his foundation has significantly contributed to the school’s establishment with a $100 million donation, according to tax filings. This is not Musk’s first foray into education; he previously opened a school named Ad Astra in 2014, primarily for the children of SpaceX employees.

The opening of the preschool comes at a politically charged time, coinciding with Donald Trump’s second term as President. Musk, a known ally of Trump, has been appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk’s past comments have highlighted his perspective on educational reform, emphasizing the need for skill-based learning over what he describes as ‘social propaganda’ in schools. This stance potentially aligns with wider Republican efforts to reduce federal oversight in education, favoring state control instead.

Notably, Ad Astra is not classified as a Montessori school, but it does embrace child-centric educational principles, fostering individualized learning experiences. The institution is keen on involving parents in the educational process, encouraging them to contribute to the school community.

This new educational venture reflects Musk’s broader vision for education reform that prioritizes equipping children with practical skills necessary for future workforce demands. As the preschool prepares to open its doors, it signifies a strategic step in aligning educational practices with technological advancements and the evolving job market.

Elon Musk’s latest investment in the education sector with Ad Astra reveals his commitment to reshaping how young minds learn. By focusing on STEM education and practical skill development, the school aims to prepare students for future challenges in a rapidly changing world.
