Sarasota County Secures Land for Landfill Needs

Sarasota County has completed a $19 million purchase of former Albritton Groves orchards located east of Interstate 75, near Clark Road. This acquisition is poised to support the county’s solid waste management efforts.

The land, previously operated by Albritton Groves for blueberry harvesting, will now be utilized by Sarasota County for essential landfill operations. Specifically, the soil from this property will serve as cover for the Central County Solid Waste Disposal Complex. This strategic move comes after the county’s 20-year-old agreement with the Albritton family, which allowed for a first-right option to purchase adjacent properties.

According to County Administrator Jonathan Lewis, this purchase was deemed crucial due to the growing population and anticipated future expansion. The Solid Waste Department asserted that acquiring this site was in the community’s best interest, as it would provide ‘future borrow soils’ needed for waste coverage. This decision followed a thorough evaluation of alternative sites, considering impacts and costs.

In September 2022, Sarasota County signaled its intent to buy the 341-acre plot. By April 2023, county commissioners had authorized a $19 million contract for the sale. Extending the surveying period and allowing the seller to vacate the premises were part of the contract’s amendments. The commission also approved the issuance of revenue bonds over 15 years, to be repaid from the Solid Waste System Operating and Maintenance Fund, supplemented by tipping fees.

The deal was finalized on October 8, marking a significant step in ensuring efficient landfill operations. As Genevieve Judge, a county spokesperson explained, soil plays a vital role in minimizing landfill odors, deterring pests, and managing environmental factors like rain diversion. Judge also noted that this initiative is not an extension of the county’s landfill but a cost-saving measure that could save residents $50 million while reducing road congestion.

Despite repeated inquiries, the Albritton family did not comment on their future plans or confirm the potential establishment of a new blueberry picking site. Meanwhile, local residents can expect fewer dump trucks on the roads and a long-term, environmentally sound solution for waste management.

Sarasota County’s acquisition of land from Albritton Groves marks a forward-thinking approach to waste management. By securing soil resources, the county is set to achieve substantial savings and operational efficiency in its landfill processes.
