RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Leaders of the BRICS nations, meeting for a summit in Rio de Janeiro, are preparing to formally condemn trade tariffs imposed by the administration of United States President Donald Trump. According to a draft of the summit’s official statement, the group will express “serious concerns” that the tariffs are illegal and pose a significant risk to the global economy.

The BRICS bloc—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—represents a significant portion of the world’s economic power. The emerging nations collectively account for approximately 40 percent of global economic output and are home to about half of the world’s population.

The draft statement, which was obtained by the news agency AFP, indicates a unified front among the major emerging economies against the U.S. trade policies. The document highlights the group’s opposition to what it describes as “indiscriminate” import tariffs enacted by President Trump.

This collective stance signals growing international pushback against the tariffs, with the BRICS leaders expected to assert that the measures are not compliant with international trade law. The core of their argument is that such protectionist policies threaten to destabilize and harm the interconnected global economic system.
