With New Year’s Eve around the corner, you might be bracing for the usual hangover horrors that follow a night of celebration. Brands, however, are stepping up to help keep those dreaded post-party headaches at bay.
Hangovers have long been an unwelcome companion to festive celebrations, thanks largely to alcohol and its toxic byproducts. Dr. Amy Myers, a functional medicine and gut health expert, explains that alcohol is broken down in the liver by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, producing acetaldehyde—a toxic compound. If you drink faster than your body can process this compound, it builds up, causing nausea, headaches, and an overall sense of feeling unwell.
While abstaining from alcohol is the surest way to avoid a hangover, Dr. Myers suggests some damage control methods if a drink is on the itinerary. Staying hydrated with water and electrolytes, getting extra sleep, and using activated charcoal are some ways to mitigate the effects. Supplements to replenish depleted nutrients, such as B vitamins, antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and liver- and gut-supporting ingredients like milk thistle and dihydromyricetin, are also recommended.
The hangover cure market is growing rapidly, with various brands offering innovative solutions. The #HangoverCure hashtag on TikTok garners nearly 2 million views weekly, with products like Liquid I.V. and Pedialyte gaining popularity on Amazon. These products are being bought in bulk for events, signaling a strong demand among consumers.
Traditional hydration solutions, like Pedialyte, are still in the game, but new entrants like Waterboy are redefining the approach with their Weekend Recovery electrolyte powder drink. This product not only offers 3,200 mg of electrolytes but also includes L-Theanine to ease anxiety and ginger to combat nausea, positioning it as a comprehensive recovery package.
Then there’s ZBiotics, which approaches the hangover problem from a gut health perspective. Their Pre-Alcohol flavorless shot, to be consumed before drinking, uses a genetically engineered probiotic to break down acetaldehyde more efficiently than the liver alone can.
Other innovative products include H-Proof’s The Anytime You Drink Vitamin, which uses a combination of B vitamins, liver supporters, and antioxidants, and Joyn’s Alcohol Flush and Hangover Reducer that targets both alcohol flush and hangover symptoms.
Even for those whose headaches won’t quit after all these remedies, there’s the HungovrAF Cap, a cooling headgear designed to help alleviate hangover-induced discomfort. ‘When you wake up and your head is absolutely pounding, that’s when I would slip it on,’ explains founder Lauren Ferry.
While various products are available to potentially ease the pain of hangovers, the effectiveness may vary. Exploring different options could lead to a more comfortable post-party recovery, enabling one to continue enjoying celebrations without the dreaded aftermath.
