The local community is mourning the loss of veteran broadcaster Mark Spain, who died at 64. Following a brief but courageous fight with pancreatic cancer, Mark’s passing was announced by his wife, Lynita, in a heartfelt message on his Facebook page. She described him as a beacon of hope, highlighting his deep love for Lynchburg and his unwavering commitment to equality, respect, and kindness.
Mark’s journey in journalism began early at the age of nine as a paperboy for the Cleveland Press. His passion for communication led him to major in the field at Cleveland State University. His career spanned various cities, including Fort Wayne, Erie, Indianapolis, and Cleveland, before he made a significant impact at First Coast News in Jacksonville from 2000, where he spent 14 fruitful years. In 2015, he took on the role of lead anchor at WSET, where he was recognized for his exceptional work as Best News Anchor by the Association Press of the Virginias in both 2018 and 2019.
Beyond his on-screen presence, Mark was deeply involved in community initiatives. His legacy is not only defined by his professional achievements but also by his generous community spirit.
In her tribute, Lynita expressed the comfort she found knowing he was freed from suffering, despite the challenging battle they faced together. She fondly referred to him as her ‘first true love’ and acknowledged the difficulties that lay ahead, while expressing faith that divine guidance and protection would accompany them.
Mark Spain’s legacy endures not just through his notable career achievements but through the love and respect he garnered within his community. His dedication to journalism and compassion for others will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
