British Indie Label Relentless Records Sets Sights on America

For 25 years, Relentless Records has been at the forefront of bringing bold new British talent to the world. Now, this indie powerhouse is aiming for the U.S. market. With a stellar track record, including Joss Stone and KT Tunstall, their next chapter could be thrilling.

Relentless Records has found success in pushing boundaries and taking risks. In a landscape dominated by algorithms, they believe in artists that others might overlook. Opening a U.S. office is the latest leap in their journey, and it’s filled with promise.

Shabir “Shabs” Jobanputra founded Relentless Records as a joint venture with Ministry of Sound over two decades ago. At that time, he aimed to bring hip-hop, R&B, and dance records on vinyl to the forefront. His journey from Uganda as a refugee and growing up in London shaped his bold approach in the music industry. By 2009, Jobanputra became one of the first Asian presidents at Virgin Records U.K., a testament to his relentless ambition.

The label’s first major success came with Artful Dodger’s “Re-Rewind,” which hit No.2 in the U.K. charts. This success heralded a new wave of U.K. garage music and a slew of other hits, including KT Tunstall and Joss Stone. Even “Baby Shark” found its way into their lineup, racking up billions of streams. Despite this, opportunities like Amy Winehouse were passed over, with Jobanputra focusing elsewhere.

Relentless Records has always embraced risk, signing acts others ignored. In today’s world, dominated by digital algorithms, this strategy is challenging. Jobanputra acknowledges Brexit and market changes have made exporting British culture harder. The competitive U.S. market poses its challenges, but offers enormous growth potential.

By partnering with Sony Music U.K., Relentless is taking its first step into the U.S. with plans for a new office. Jobanputra is clear that initial efforts will focus on developing their existing talent in this globally dominating market. “We’ll be a small creative shop, but one really focused on artist development out of the U.S.,” he shares.

Their expansion includes a new alternative music imprint and a vinyl set celebrating their 25th anniversary. Jobanputra believes guitar music will soon have its moment in the streaming era, much like country music recently. “We can see alternative artists that really excite us,” he said, looking forward to a fruitful year for British and guitar music.

In addition to the record label, the Relentless Music Group now encompasses artist/label services, management, the Notting Hill Arts Club, a music publisher, and the Notting Hill Academy of Music. Jobanputra envisions a synergy where academy students progress to club staff and potentially become part of the label. It’s about nurturing talent through their journey.

Singer-songwriter Mackenzy Mackay is the first of the new wave targeting the U.S., signifying their unwavering energy. Jobanputra emphasizes on continuing the passionate work with artists to crack the global code. Their commitment to staying with their artists through highs and lows is key to their philosophy.

Relentless Records’ venture into the U.S. market marks an exciting new chapter. With a legacy of championing unique talent, they remain committed to global success. As they broaden their horizons, the label’s innovative spirit ensures they will continue to make waves in the music industry.
