Celebrating 35 Years of the Legendary Roadster

The Mazda MX-5 Miata, known for igniting the roadster craze, marks its 35th year with a special anniversary edition debuting soon.

Since its 1989 debut, over 1.2 million Mazda MX-5 Miatas have been sold worldwide, earning it a spot in the Guinness Book of Records as the top-selling roadster globally. Now celebrating 35 years of redefining the roadster category, Mazda is set to unveil the limited MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition at the Tokyo Auto Salon, Japan’s premier car customization show.

This special edition will be available worldwide starting in February, but only 1,000 units are up for grabs, making it a hot commodity for enthusiasts. The new model’s highlight is its distinctive Artisan Red color and optional tan leather interior, reflecting Mazda’s commitment to continuous improvement or ‘kaizen.’

The MX-5 lineup has continually evolved since the fourth generation ND model launched in 2016. Engineers have focused on refining its steering, engine, transmission, and suspension, alongside its design both outside and inside. Special badging and premium paint options like Soul Red Crystal and Machine Grey Metallic will make this model stand out even further.

Mazda plans to showcase the 35th Anniversary model at the 2025 Rolex 24 at Daytona in late January. This model is not just about aesthetics; it’s been sport-tuned with features such as Bilstein dampers and a limited-slip differential. Safety is upgraded with systems like Adaptive Front-lighting, High Beam Control, and Traffic Sign Recognition.

A key feature is the new DSC-Track mode, enhancing the brand’s ‘Jinbai Ittai’ philosophy of creating harmony between car and driver. This innovation lowers the intervention threshold, providing a thrilling, dynamic driving experience that allows for more oversteer—ideal for those who crave the excitement of precision driving.

Back when the MX-5 first hit the roads, it didn’t just become a bestseller; it inspired a wave of competitors, including the Mercedes SLK and BMW Z3. Such influence underscores its impact on the automotive world.

Pricing for this new masterpiece starts at $29,330 for the Miata Sport 6MT Soft Top. The more luxurious hard-top Grand Touring 6MT RF and the 6AT RF models are priced respectively at $37,350 and $38,320. U.S. buyers will enjoy the powerful 181-horsepower 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine, available with either a manual or automatic six-speed transmission.

The 35th Anniversary model also includes the innovative Kinematic Posture Control system. This feature works hand-in-hand with the rear suspension and brakes to reduce body roll during tight turns, further enhancing the roadster’s stability and precision.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata’s journey and continuing legacy are tribute to its enduring appeal and Mazda’s dedication to automotive excellence.
