Conan O’Brien recently opened up about his cherished memories with his parents following their passing just days apart.
Dr. Thomas F. O’Brien, Conan’s father, passed away on December 9 at the age of 95. Tragically, just three days later, Conan’s mother, Ruth Reardon O’Brien, left this world at 92. Despite the immense loss, the television personality fondly recalls the deep bond his parents shared. He described them to the Boston Globe as ‘kindred spirits’ who were ‘incredibly hard-working and disciplined.’
Growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts, Conan, along with his five siblings, was raised by two remarkable individuals. His father, a physician and Harvard professor, was a visionary in the medical field, notably co-founding the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Centre for Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance. Conan shared a vivid memory of his father’s adventurous spirit, recalling how he would embark on global journeys with minimal luggage, saying, ‘I’m off to Peru with a change of clothes in my briefcase to try and launch this website for a hospital there high in the mountains.’
Conan’s mother, Ruth, was an accomplished lawyer and the second female partner at the prestigious firm Ropes & Gray. Described as both ‘the realist’ and ‘heroic,’ Ruth played a critical role in managing family life. Conan reminisced about her dedication, ensuring the children were cared for, their clothes prepared, and appointments kept. After fulfilling her family duties, Ruth would seamlessly transition to her professional persona.
The comedian appreciates his parents’ compassion and drive to help others. Ruth, in particular, felt a strong calling to bring happiness within her community, motivated by her Catholic faith to be of service to people. Meanwhile, Thomas valued listening to diverse stories and learning from those vastly different from himself, a quality Conan views as a beautiful part of his father’s legacy.
Conan O’Brien’s heartfelt tribute to his parents reveals the extraordinary impact they had on him, shaping his life with their spirit, dedication, and compassion.
