Phil Zielke, a two-time cancer survivor, found a lifeline in care packages and cards during his battle with the disease. Inspired by this support, he has been returning the favor ever since.
After overcoming stage 4 cancer twice, Phil Zielke founded Phil’s Friends. ‘A group of people put a care package together for me,’ he recalls. ‘They all signed their names, saying they were thinking about me and praying for me.’ Feeling uplifted by these gestures, Zielke decided to pass on the encouragement.
Phil’s Friends is all about surprise and comfort. Packages, delivered anonymously, find their way to cancer patients’ doorsteps or hospital rooms, offering an unexpected burst of hope. Volunteers select a recipient from an online map and then assemble the packages with care. Over 18 years, the organization has shipped more than 60,000 packages and a million cards full of encouragement.
The impact of these care packages touches lives deeply. Anjela McGrone, a triple-negative breast cancer survivor, shares her experience, ‘When I got out of the hospital, a box was waiting for me,’ she says. It contained items like a Bible, blanket, cup, hat, and socks—thoughtful comforts during her recovery.
McGrone’s package came from Angie Monaco, a former oncology nurse and fellow breast cancer survivor. ‘I met one of my best friends through Phil’s Friends,’ Monaco reminisces. She strongly believes in the power of these care packages to uplift and bring hope at the lowest of times.
Through simple acts of kindness, Phil’s Friends has become a beacon of hope for many battling cancer. This initiative shows the profound impact of community support and the importance of uplifting those who need it most.
