From Foster Caregiver to Choosing a Child-Free Life

At 14, life threw me into a role few my age could fathom—caring for foster children in the heart of the night while my peers fretted over teenage crushes.

My journey began when my parents, who adopted me at six, opened our home to four foster children, often with special needs. As my mother showed early signs of Alzheimer’s and my father’s lung cancer resurfaced, I found myself filling the void, stepping up to care for these children.

One unforgettable experience was caring for a newborn boy. While friends anticipated parenthood with ample preparation, my experience was thrust upon me without warning. A chance encounter with a cashier questioning if the baby was mine reminded me of the complexity of my reality. He wasn’t mine in the legal sense, but my heart told a different story. For months, we danced to classic tunes and read books together. When it was time for him to leave, dressing him in a slightly oversized gray suit was my silent hope for his bright future.

Despite sleepless nights and juggling school with caregiving, the children never called me ‘mommy.’ Instead, they invented endearing versions of my name, each a symbol of our unique connection.

Today, my choice to remain child-free often baffles others. Social media feeds me glimpses of friends’ children reaching life milestones—college send-offs and first steps. While some women judge me for this life choice, I am fulfilled by the freedom to explore diverse careers, travel, and write. My life is rich with experiences that are uniquely mine.

Reflecting on my past, I’ve shared joys and burdens that other women associate with motherhood. Though I stumble when asked about my ‘kids,’ the faces of children I cared for remain etched in my memory. Occasionally, I ponder if I’ve missed a crucial aspect of womanhood, yet the memories of midnight feedings and cherishing first smiles resonate deeply.

Though my house remains physically empty, the memories of countless foster children who shared periods of their young lives with me fill my heart. My chosen path may defy societal norms, but it offers richness and fulfillment unique to my journey.
