The much-anticipated third installment of Sony’s Spider-Man animated saga has chosen its leaders. Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson, who’ve been integral to the series since it began, will take the helm of “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.”
Persichetti and Thompson aren’t newcomers to the Spider-Verse. Since 2018, they’ve significantly contributed to the franchise, with Persichetti co-directing the original “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and executive producing its sequel. Meanwhile, Thompson stepped up from production designer on the first film to director on the second, teaming up with Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers.
Both directors expressed their excitement about concluding Miles Morales’s journey, highlighting the creativity and effort poured into the project. They stated, “We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it. We’re bringing everything we’ve got.”
“Into the Spider-Verse” was not only a box office hit, earning $384 million worldwide, but also a critical darling, winning an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. It introduced audiences to the multiverse concept and popularized the notion that “anyone can wear the mask.” Its sequel, “Across the Spider-Verse,” outdid its predecessor financially, grossing $690 million globally.
The upcoming film, though delayed from its original 2024 release date, promises to build on this success, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller returning as scriptwriters, along with producers Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Jinko Gotoh. Executive production will see contributions from Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg.
Lord and Miller have credited Bob and Justin’s unique contributions, saying, “Bob and Justin’s fingerprints are woven into the DNA of these films, and their passion for Miles’ journey shines through in every frame of his last adventure.”
Beyond this project, Persichetti’s resume includes co-writing “The Little Prince” and creative roles in DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots.” His career began at Disney, with contributions to classics like “Tarzan” and “Treasure Planet.” Thompson’s experience includes production design for the “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” series, solidifying his expertise in animation.
The collaboration between Persichetti and Thompson marks a promising chapter for the Spider-Verse. Their experience and passion for Miles Morales’s story bring high expectations for a fitting and exciting conclusion to this beloved animated trilogy.
