Missing part of practice on December 19, the football player was informed of the tragic event by The New York Times. Fortunately, Dawkins’ family was unharmed, though the pilot—the sole occupant—tragically did not survive, as confirmed by Patrick Welch, East Aurora’s Police Chief.
East Aurora’s emergency services were flooded with 911 calls about a small aircraft crash near Stewart Court. “The East Aurora Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a small aircraft crash in the area of Stewart Court, in the town of Aurora, Erie County, New York,” stated Welch. Responders found the plane engulfed in flames between two houses, but thankfully, no other injuries were reported.
Prior to the crash, a local Buffalo airport had alerted of mechanical issues concerning a plane, which was determined to be the same aircraft involved. While Dawkins resumed practice later, he shared that his fiancée, Daiyaana Muhammad, was at the property to pick up mail, but no one in his family resides there.
Expressing his sympathy, Dawkins offered his heartfelt condolences, saying, “I still wonder why things happen in life, but tragedies happen all of the time. The biggest point about it is I just hope that the pilot’s family is okay. I hope that they’re doing alright because somebody lost their life today.” He was grateful for his family’s safety, acknowledging the prompt alert systems and security measures in place. “I’m glad that my family is perfectly fine,” he noted, recognizing the efforts of those who maintain their security.
