Imagine navigating the boundless deserts of Jordan with the sun beating down intensely, all while wearing intricate costumes that make a simple bathroom break a logistical nightmare. That’s exactly what Zendaya faced on the set of ‘Dune: Part Two,’ leading to an unexpected health scare due to dehydration.
While filming the highly anticipated sequel directed by Denis Villeneuve, the award-winning star shared an unusual and challenging predicament. The remote location of the shoot meant that the closest restroom was quite a trek. For Zendaya, this meant that drinking water could result in a time-consuming wardrobe ordeal.
In her candid recount to W Magazine, Zendaya explained, ‘It was very hot, and I remember thinking, ‘Oh, man, the bathrooms are so far away,’ because we had to hike to the locations. If you have to pee, you need at least 10 minutes to get out of the costumes.’ This concern led her to limit her water intake, prompting fears of an embarrassing situation in her elaborate suit.
However, her strategy backfired. ‘One day, I didn’t drink enough and I had a heatstroke. I felt so barfy. I remember calling my mom on the bathroom floor, saying, ‘I feel terrible.’ She was like, ‘Did you drink water today?’ I said no. I thought I was being smart, but you can’t do that. So, lesson learned,’ the star revealed.
This isn’t the first time filmmakers have ventured into the expansive dunes. David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune’ paved the way for Villeneuve’s revisit, with the 2021 release and its follow-up garnering significant attention and box office success, earning a collective $1.12 billion.
The phenomenon of ‘Dune’ continues to expand with the introduction of the prequel series ‘Dune: Prophecy,’ adding another layer to the richly textured world. Meanwhile, Villeneuve has plans to extend the world further with a third installment. Enthusiasts can look forward to the next chapter filming in the coming years, tentatively based on Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah.’
Zendaya’s encounter underscores the rigorous physical demands that often go unnoticed behind the scenes of filmmaking. Her experience serves as a reminder of the crucial importance of maintaining health, even in the face of daunting professional challenges. In the vast, unforgiving desert, she learned a valuable lesson about self-care that transcends the world of cinema.
