A group of nearly two dozen sea turtles has returned to the ocean after a comprehensive rehabilitation and relocation project. This winter, the cold-stunned turtles were discovered along the shores of Cape Cod. Initially, they were evaluated by the New England Aquarium before being moved to the Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program for extended care.
Following their recovery, the turtles embarked on a 20-hour journey from Connecticut to Georgia, culminating in their release on Jekyll Island. The group included 14 green sea turtles, six loggerhead sea turtles, and two critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles.
Sea turtles, unable to regulate their body temperature, often become trapped in Cape Cod Bay during cold weather. Each turtle was given a customized treatment plan to address infections and other health issues stemming from their cold exposure.
The mission aimed to offer these sea turtles a renewed chance at life, enhancing their probability of long-term survival and contributing to the potential growth of their species. In their natural habitats, sea turtles are vulnerable to threats such as entanglement, plastic debris ingestion, habitat loss, and changing ocean conditions.
