An extensive investigation has led to the indictment of almost two dozen individuals associated with a notorious Bronx gang accused of multiple violent crimes, including several shootings and a homicide. Authorities revealed these charges during a press conference on Thursday. The gang, known as “800 YGs,” has been a source of fear in the Crotona area of the Bronx for several years. Their alleged activities include 14 separate shooting incidents, one of which was fatal, alongside two non-fatal shootings and 11 other occurrences where shots were fired but did not hit anyone.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, alongside Mayor Eric Adams and Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, addressed these developments. Tisch emphasized the indiscriminate nature of the violence, highlighting that these crimes often occurred in broad daylight. In one instance, gunfire was directed at a city bus as passengers disembarked, and in another, bullets narrowly missed a family with young children standing on a sidewalk. The actions of the gang demonstrate a blatant disregard for public safety and human life.
According to Tisch, of the 20 gang members indicted, 17 have been apprehended, while efforts are underway to locate the remaining three. This operation was part of a two-and-a-half-year investigation led by the gun violence suppression division, a specialized team proficient in utilizing surveillance technology to track and arrest offenders. Tisch underscored the importance of such precise police work, cautioning against proposals to eliminate these resources from the city’s law enforcement toolkit.
Statistics presented by Tisch indicated that 63 percent of shootings across the city in April were concentrated in the Bronx, with gang activity, particularly involving the Trinitarios, being a significant contributing factor. Efforts remain focused on dismantling these organizations in cooperation with the District Attorney’s office.
