Broward Detention Deputy Faces Charges for Allegedly Assaulting Wife

On Tuesday evening, a detention deputy with the Broward Sheriff’s Office was apprehended following a distressing 911 call that captured him repeatedly assaulting his wife. The incident, which unfolded on Southeast 15th Street in Dania Beach, led to the deputy’s arrest on multiple charges of aggravated and domestic battery. The violent episode resulted in severe injuries to his wife, including internal bleeding and loss of hearing in one ear.

David Isaac Powell, aged 30, faces serious charges after investigations revealed that the attack was not an isolated event but part of a troubling pattern of violence spanning over a year. The affidavit supporting a risk protection order indicated that the abuse had intensified, prompting the victim to take precautionary measures, such as hiding pieces of Powell’s firearms around their home for her safety. Subsequently, authorities confiscated his firearms.

The response from deputies was prompted by a 911 call with an open line, through which disturbing screams and pleas for help were audible. Upon arrival, Powell claimed that the altercation had been merely verbal. However, the victim, who initially supported this account, later disclosed the extent of the physical abuse after deputies reviewed the complete 911 recording. The audio revealed Powell’s wife repeatedly begging him to stop, interspersed with the sound of slaps, and Powell’s chilling promise to continue the violence.

Interviews with the victim’s mother painted a grim picture of escalating violence. Over their four-year marriage, the victim had suffered numerous incidents of abuse, including being choked, kicked, and slapped, leading to visible injuries. The mother’s testimony included accounts of Powell’s aggressive outbursts, such as destroying a Christmas tree and causing her daughter’s concussion.

During the latest incident, the violence reportedly began over an argument regarding dog excrement tracked into the house. Powell’s subsequent assault involved multiple blows, a belt, and a sizable backpack, culminating in his wife managing to escape with their children. The aftermath saw her hospitalized with a series of injuries, including intra-abdominal bleeding and a ruptured eardrum membrane.

Powell, who joined the Sheriff’s Office in December 2021, was detained and now faces charges stemming from four distinct incidents against his wife. Authorities completed a risk protection order, resulting in the confiscation of two handguns and an AR-15.

This case remains under investigation, with updates expected as more information becomes available.
