Connecticut Gas Station Clerk Allegedly Stole Necklace and Cash from Lost Wallet Handed in by Customer

An incident at a gas station in Somers has led to the arrest of a clerk, accused of stealing a necklace and cash from a customer’s wallet. The Connecticut State Police reported that 22-year-old Margaret Maheu of Somers was charged with fourth-degree larceny on Tuesday. Authorities detained her at Troop C in Tolland, following an investigation into a theft that occurred earlier this month.

The investigation began with a complaint received on April 6. A woman reported visiting the Henny Penny gas station between 6 and 7 p.m., later realizing she had left her wallet behind. Upon her return, she found that the wallet had been handed to the cashier by another customer. However, she discovered that $200 and a necklace valued at $950 were missing.

The arrest warrant affidavit details the subsequent police response. A trooper visited the gas station at approximately 2 a.m., where the on-duty clerk stated he was not present when the wallet was turned in. He identified Margaret Maheu as the clerk who had received the wallet earlier.

The affidavit further explains that the store’s video surveillance was reviewed, revealing footage of the victim leaving the wallet at the pump, followed by another individual picking it up and giving it to Maheu. The footage then allegedly shows Maheu entering an office area, briefly inspecting the wallet, and placing it over a desk. She is seen moving the wallet to her pocket and subsequently moving between the cash register and the office several times.

About five minutes later, Maheu reportedly entered a bathroom, emerging shortly to assist a customer, before returning to the office and placing the wallet on a shelf.

On April 9, police visited Maheu’s residence to inquire about the incident. According to the affidavit, she consistently denied taking any items from the wallet, claiming she placed it in the office immediately after receiving it. Maheu is currently free on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Rockville Superior Court on April 30.
