A man previously sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend is back in custody after an erroneous release from jail. Twenty-three-year-old Kathan Guzman was apprehended on Friday following his unexpected release from the Clayton County Jail in Georgia on March 27.
Guzman had begun serving his sentence after being convicted of strangling 19-year-old Delila Grayson in 2022. Delila’s mother, Christina Grayson, expressed mixed emotions but affirmed that Guzman is now in the correct place to serve his sentence.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office has attributed the release mistake to inadequate training and attention. The error prompted an extensive search involving multiple law enforcement agencies in Georgia and Florida. Guzman’s mother, Iris Guzman, who had traveled to Georgia to pick him up following his release, questioned the accuracy of the release and expressed frustration over the subsequent ordeal.
The tragic incident occurred in August 2022 in Riverdale, Georgia. Authorities discovered Delila’s body in a bathtub at her home. Delila, originally from Kissimmee, Florida, had moved to Georgia with Guzman, her boyfriend at the time, to begin a new life.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the error and is considering disciplinary actions, including possible terminations. Guzman was released by mistake on March 27, 2025, and his release went unnoticed until April 8, when the District Attorney’s Office inquired about his whereabouts, triggering a search operation.
Through collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals, Guzman was located and apprehended in Florida on April 11. He is expected to be returned to the Clayton County Jail while the investigation continues. This incident marks the second error of mistakenly released inmates from the same facility.
